Harold Vollmer

February 19, 2017

Harold E Vollmer passed away in Falls City on Sunday, February 19, 2017 four days before his 85th birthday.  Harold was born on February 23, 1932 on a farm in rural Falls City to parents Herbert A Vollmer and Hilda L Eickhoff Vollmer.  He was the oldest of four children.  He attended both the Christ Lutheran and St. Paul's Lutheran Elementary Schools. He graduated from Falls City High School in 1951.

Harold and Dorothy Werner were married on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955 at St Mark’s Lutheran Church, rural Verdon. They made their home on a farm in rural Verdon. Moving to their current residence in Falls City in 1995. They are the parents of three daughters, Leann, Barbara and Lynett.

Harold worked on the family farm alongside his father and brother, Harvey.  In 1964, they incorporated the farming operation becoming Cedar Farms Inc.  Harold retired from the farm in 1995.

Harold was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Falls City.  He was on the Verdon Coop Board serving a chairperson. After retirement, Harold became “domesticated” baking bread, washing dishes, cleaning house and other chores.  He and Dorothy would gather black walnuts, which Harold would shell and sell to happy customers.

Harold and Dorothy enjoyed playing Pinochle belonging to two different card clubs and playing cards at church.

In November, the women’s sewing group at St. Paul’s awarded Harold the “best quilt block cutter” for all his work in cutting the quilt blocks that were made into hundreds of quilts for the Orphan Grain Train and Lutheran World Relief.
