Lucia V. Ahern, 89, of Shubert, NE, passed away January 25, 2008 at FallsCityCareCenter. She was born April 27, 1918 at Omaha, NE. She was the daughter of Italian immigrants Antonio and Marianna (DiMauro) Nanfito.
On October 25, 1945 she married Harold F. Ahern at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Omaha. They established their home at Shubert. They farmed and lived in Shubert their entire married lives. Harold passed away May 29, 1997.
Lucia was raised at Omaha and graduated from St.MaryHigh School and then attended Junior College of St. Mary both of Omaha. She graduated from CreightonUniversity at Omaha in 1941 and received her Masters Degree in Education from Peru State College at Peru, NE in 1957. She began her teaching career at Shubert in the fall of 1941. She also taught at Verdon, NE and then at FallsCityHigh School from 1959 until her retirement in 1978.
She was an avid local historian and was very active in numerous Shubert and RichardsonCounty historical projects. In 1984, after years of researching the facts and folklore of local legend Antoine Barada, she published the book “The Ballad of The Baradas”. She enjoyed singing, writing her own music and playing the piano.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church at Shubert and served as the organist and was a member of her churches Altar Society. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of Falls City, Shubert American Legion, the Retired Teachers Association, and Richardson County Historical Society and was once their president.
Lucia is survived by a daughter, Anita Bourke and husband Jim of Oklahoma City, OK, son, Tony Ahern and wife Janet of Shubert, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers, James and Charles Nanfito.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 10:00 AM at St. Anne’s Catholic Church at Shubert with Father Bernard Kimminau as the presiding priest. Interment will be in St. Anne’s CatholicCemetery.
Catholic Daughters rosary to be recited on Wednesday at 4:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.
A parish rosary to be recited on Wednesday at 7:30 PM at Dorr and Clark funeral Home. The family will greet friends following the rosary.
