Welcome to the memorial page for

Luella Marie Cummins

July 25, 2017

Luella Marie Cummins, 95, of Falls City, NE, passed away July 25, 2017 at Falls City. She was born February 10, 1922 in rural Falls City, the daughter of Gus Fiene and Pearl (Duerfeldt) Fiene. She attended Williamsville country school and Barada High School through the 10th grade then graduated from Falls City High School.

In 1943 she graduated as a registered nurse from Missouri Methodist School of Nursing in St. Joseph, MO and worked there as Night Supervisor until she was married.

Luella was united in marriage to James Cummins on December 16, 1944. He died December 19, 1998. During Jim’s Navy career she traveled with him when possible. They lived in Iowa City, IA, San Francisco, Orange, TX, Pensacola, FL, Renton, WA, Mobile, AL and three times in Norfolk, VA.

In 1956 they returned to Nebraska and settled in Verdon to raise their family. She was active in the Verdon Christian Church as Sunday School superintendent, teacher and member of the Missionary and the Willing Workers Society.

She worked alongside her husband in the family owned feed store in Verdon. She was a past member of the Rebeccas, Eastern Star, Past Noble Grand, Kennsington Club and the CWL Club. They moved to Falls City in 1992.

Falls City Community Hospital employed her as a staff nurse and then as the Surgery Supervisor until she retired in 1984. She followed her mother’s footsteps in stamp collecting and has been an avid collector since 1940. She liked to stay busy with embroidery, ceramics, craft activities and spending time with friends. She had been a long distance member of the Happy Hearts and Homes Extension Club since 2014 and won blue ribbons for her embroidery items at the Kay County Fair in Oklahoma.

Jim and Luella loved to travel, see the country and meet people. They visited 45 of the 50 states, as well as Canada and Mexico. Upon Retirement in 1984, she and Jim became ‘snowbirds’ to enjoy spending the winters in Wellton, AZ and returning to Nebraska for the summers. After Jim’s death in 1998, Luella continued with this migration until the travel became too difficult in 2015. Family was very important to her, she loved visits and get-togethers with all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Luella is survived by her children, Dennis and his wife Viola of San Diego, CA, Linda Blakley and her husband Reford of Blackwell, OK, Bill and his wife Valanda of Lowell, AR, Terry and his wife Dana of Verdon, son-in-law, James Cockerham of Verdon, eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and a sister, Caroline Palmer of Falls City. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Milton Fiene, children, Bob Cummins and Donna Cockerham.

Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor David Lockard officiating. Her cremains will be taken to The Baker Tanks near Wellton, AZ to be spread with Jim’s cremains.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 4, 2017 from 7-8:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.
