Max and Joanne later moved back to the farm and had 2 children, Max William Shafer III and Penny Diane Shafer.  They lived on the family farm until 1970 when they bought a farm 1 mile away.  Max continued farming and worked for a security company eventually working security at Cooper Nuclear Station.  Max retired from the nuclear plant and worked mowing 2 small cemeteries and working at Indian Cave State Park.  They camp hosted at the park for many years. He continued these jobs up until the time of his death on July 31, 2021.

Max and Joanne loved to go camping, fishing and hunting and in later years enjoyed cooking together.  Max was involved at the Shubert Christian Church for decades and enjoyed his time there.
