Message from Tom and Susan Thomas, McCool Jct.
December 11, 2014 7:11 PM

Dear Family: We were so very sorry to learns of Earl's death. We have lots of fun memories of him when he coached our daughter, Stephie. Tom also was as assistant coach when "Dash" was coaching football at McCool. They had many good times together. We will always smile when we think of him and he will not be forgotten.

Tom's father died this last Tuesday, and his visitation is Friday in Broken Bow, with services Saturday. Unfortunately we will have to miss Earl's funeral services; but we will be thinking of you all.

With sincere sympathy,
Tom and Susan

Some favorite memories from the YHS Class of 1970

Carol, Thanks for going...I was a big Earl Dallas fan...wish we could have been better players for him and coach Penner!:)

Dave Hawley

He was my driver's ed instructor. I had never been behind the wheel of a car. I stalled the car, an automatic, twice at a stop sign. He asked me if I had ever ridden a bicycle. We made it through the training, and he was very patient. Probably the other students in the car were freaking out.

I have to say I'm a little surprised that he was only 30 when we graduated...always thought he was MUCH older!

Forgotten Driver's Ed...probably a good thing!

I ran into him at the York Legion Club years ago. He told me to call him "Earl" now that we were all grown. I just couldn't...he'll always be Mr. Dallas to me. I also remember driver's ed. He let me drive all the way to Seward and around their big swimming pool. I really liked him...he was always fun.

I remember a 9th grade BB game, he came up to me after and asked if I knew I was playing with 5 fouls.... I fouled a lot so it didn't surprise me..... He thought it was pretty funny. He was my coach for three years, we both knew I was not very good but I hustled and played hard, thus the fouls! I was his 6th man normally with more fouls than points..... We understood each other. So sad to hear of Earl Dallas' passing.

I have a little story about Earl, who was always "Coach Dallas" to me. One day in Phys Ed a few of us were joking around, not paying attention (as usual) and disrupting his class in the old YHS gym. As I remember, the guilty ones, besides me, were Lee Newcomer and Dan Koons, although I'm not sure any more. (Lee and Dan were probably deserving, even if it wasn't them.)

Coach Dallas showed what I've always believed was a spark of genius in handling the situation. He invited the three of us into the coaches' office and, a smile on his face, pulled out his custom-made swat board--a thick one with those little holes that left nice round welts on your butt, likely manufactured locally (in shop class) by someone with a sadistic turn of mind.

Coach handed the board to me, stepped back and told us basically that we had to self-administer our punishment. Each one of us was to swat one of the other friends/troublemakers--we could choose who hit whom--but if we gave too "friendly" a swat, Coach Dallas would ask us to administer another one, and so on until he judged we had given a "good one".

What a moral dilemma! None of us wanted to leave big welts--friendships (as well as butts) could suffer--but we knew that if we didn't, we'd be forced to swing that thing again, and maybe again after that.

Well, as I recall we made it through with only one swat per butt, and yes, I did find it a little painful to sit in class for a day or two afterwards. But I'll always admire the method Coach Dallas employed in trying to teach us a lesson (I say TRYING, because of course that wasn't the last time I got in trouble for classroom behavior issues; but in my mind it was pretty much one of the BEST--although another one administered by Harold Elkins ranks right up there).

Earl Dallas was good guy, a players' coach, and he left me with many pleasant memories.

Absolutely a players' coach.....he was a good buffer to Coach Penner...and I think he was still better than any of us as a player!

I think we might have been more blessed teacher-wise than we thought at the time...especially in the character department....

Earl really had patience with us especially during driver education. He let me drive to McCool Junction to pick up my motercycle and then followed me back to York. Not many would have done that. He made PE fun! Funny, I was just thinking about him a couple of weeks ago.

These stories have been fun....Dave, I remember the board of education incident....I have a couple more.

During my junior year Coach D took a big chance (I think we were 20 points ahead or behind) and he put me in the Geneva game. The Geneva player sent up his free throw, missed and I immediately scooped the ball off the boards and put it back up for two points -- for Geneva. Earl benched me immediately. As I sat down he looked at me and said, "I don't know whether to chew you out for scoring for them or to congratulate you for finally making a basket."

Earl was our next door neighbor. My father and Earl often spent an hour in the garage on Saturdays talking about cars and working on them. At about the same age, I walked in to hear what they were talking about and discovered Earl finishing a long draw on his whisky bottle and passing it to my Dad who promptly drank his allotment. They both told me that this knowledge stayed in the garage and I kept the promise until today. I had never seen my father drink until that moment.

This evening I told my Mom about Earl's death and casually mentioned to Mom, "Do you remember Earl and Dad always working on the cars on Saturday afternoons?" She laughed at me and said, "Cars! They were out there drinking!" Let this be a lesson -- nothing gets past our mothers.

Lee

Ok...I played a small part in Lee's story...he came in for me, and I ran past him to go to the locker room to change...as I went past, I offered some kind of encouragement which I think was nothing BUT a distraction! But it provided a great memory!

I really enjoyed all of the stories. It brings back a lot of memories. Coach Dallas influenced my life too!! Sounds like he lived a life that had an impact on a bunch of lives.

• Gerry Nixon

In his prime, he could play!!! Coach Penner was also quite the player...they were a good complement for each other !

I specifically remember that board and as I remember, it was actually made to order in one of D.R. Sandy's classes

Earl Dallas, "Coach" to me, was one of my favorite coaches at York High. He was a good teacher and coach, with a sense of humor that brought him close to all of us under his supervision. My thoughts and prayers are with Coach Dallas's family.
